How to Shop and Save in Australia

Living in Australia can be very expensive, but that doesn’t mean we can’t shop smart! specially when it comes to groceries for the family, home essentials, or even little treats for yourself, there are always ways to save. If you love stretching your dollar without sacrificing quality, welcome to our new favourite corner of the world Australia! with a few savvy tricks (and the right stores), we can always choose to shop smarter not harder. For a big family like us, it is very challenging to save every grocery trip adds up quickly, and it sometimes feels like prices just keep rising. That’s why I’ve learned to plan our weekly shopping carefully and look for discounts wherever possible. Simple habits like checking weekly specials, using store rewards, and comparing prices online have made a big difference. It’s not about cutting out everything we enjoy it’s about being smarter with what we buy so we can still enjoy family treats without the guilt.

In this blog, I’ll share how I make the most of my weekly shopping at Woolworths, Coles, ALDI and Kmart  four of my favourite spots for finding discounts and stretching every dollar. One of the biggest game changers for us has been using reward apps like Everyday Rewards from Woolworths and Flybuys from Coles and Kmart. These loyalty programs let you earn points every time you shop, which can later be used for money off your grocery bill, gift cards, or even flights!  I make sure to scan my card every time I check out  those points really do add up over time. You can also link your rewards to partner stores and online shops, giving you more ways to earn while spending on things you already need. So if your ready to know more, get your cup of coffee or tea and lets dig in reading.

Save Big at Woolworths or Woolies

Woolworths is my go to for weekly grocery shopping  it’s reliable, has great quality fresh produce, and always offers good value for money. What I love most is how easy it is to spot the savings. Every week, Woolies runs “Half Price Specials” on a wide range of products  from pantry staples to snacks and cleaning essentials. Checking their app or website before heading out helps me plan what to buy and avoid impulse spending.

For families like ours, even small discounts add up fast. Woolworths’ Everyday Rewards program makes it even better. Each shop earns points, and once you reach 2,000 points, you can get $10 off your next grocery bill or choose to collect Qantas Points if you’re saving for a family holiday. I also love how they often offer bonus points or “BOOSTS items” (from the app) on certain products or categories, so I make sure to activate those offers in the app before shopping.

💡 Tip: If you prefer shopping online, Woolworths sometimes gives extra points or exclusive discounts for first-time online orders — a great way to stock up while earning more rewards.

Coles: Great Value, Every Day

Coles has always been my favourite place to shop it’s where I know I can find quality groceries without stretching our budget too far. Their red “Down Down” signs are like little reminders that saving doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality. Whether it’s fresh produce, pantry products or snacks for the kids’ lunchboxes, Coles always has something on special.

One thing I really love about Coles is how family-friendly their prices and products are. Their Coles Brand and Coles Smart Buy items are often cheaper than name brands, but honestly, the quality is just as good, sometimes even better! I always stock up on these for everyday essentials like pasta, cereals, and cleaning supplies.

💡 Tip: Don’t skip the Flybuys program, it’s one of Australia’s best loyalty rewards. You can collect points every time you shop at Coles, Kmart, Target, and even Liquorland. Those points can be turned into money off your groceries, gift cards, or even flights. I personally save mine for the holidays it’s like a little bonus for all the weekly shopping we already do!

Another bonus I’ve noticed is how easy Coles makes it to save digitally. Their app shows weekly specials, digital coupons, and sometimes exclusive bonus Flybuys offers that don’t appear in-store. A quick check before heading out can easily add hundreds of extra points to your account over time. And if you love convenience, Coles’ Click & Collect and delivery services are worth trying they sometimes include special online-only promotions, and it saves so much time for busy mums like us.

Cost Effective, Good Quality, Every Time: ALDI Has it ALL!

If saving money is your top priority, ALDI has to be on your list. It’s hands-down one of the cheapest grocery options in Australia, but don’t let the low prices fool you the quality is excellent. From fresh fruit and vegetables to pantry staples, dairy, and even snacks, ALDI consistently delivers products that rival big-name brands at a fraction of the cost.

ALDI is perfect for stocking up on essentials without worrying about overspending. Their weekly specials and ALDI Finds (special deals on homewares, toys, and kitchen gadgets) are always worth checking, some items sell out quickly, so it pays to be early!

💡 Tip: Keep a small running list of your favourite ALDI items and check their weekly catalog online. Pair this with planning your meals ahead, and you’ll see just how much you can save each week without compromising on quality.

Although ALDI doesn’t have a rewards program like Woolworths or Coles, you really don’t need one their prices are often the lowest of all, meaning you save money every time you shop, no points required.

ALDI proves that cheap doesn’t mean low-quality, making it a must-visit for every budget-conscious family.

Kmart: Budget-Friendly Style for Every Home

No Aussie bargain guide would be complete without Kmart. For me, it’s the ultimate one stop shop for the whole family. From stylish homeware to affordable kids’ toys, school supplies, birthday gifts, and even clothing, Kmart has it all and all at prices that won’t break the budget. It’s my go to store when I need to tick off multiple things on the shopping list in one trip.

💡 Tip: Kmart’s online “Clearance” section is a hidden gem you’ll find incredible markdowns that aren’t always available in-store. Seasonal drops like Christmas decorations, back-to-school supplies, or birthday party essentials are perfect opportunities to save big before items sell out.

I also love that Kmart makes it easy to shop for my kids without spending a fortune. Their clothing range is affordable and practical, perfect for school uniforms, playtime outfits, or birthday party clothes. And for toys, they have everything from puzzles and board games to educational kits  all at great prices.

💡 Extra Tip: Sign up for Kmart’s app or newsletter to catch exclusive offers and bonus deals. I often combine these with clearance finds to save even more  it’s amazing how quickly the savings add up over a year!

Kmart isn’t just about low prices it’s about convenience, variety, and knowing that everything my kids need for school, play, and celebrations can be found under one roof. For busy families like ours, that’s priceless. Saving money doesn’t have to be complicated. It just takes a little planning and knowing where to shop. Know and plan where to picking up groceries theres a lot to go to mention. There’s always a deal waiting if you know where to look.

I hope these tips on saving at Woolworths, Coles, ALDI and Kmart help make your weekly shopping a little easier and a lot more budget-friendly.
