Budget-Friendly Family Days Out in Australia (That Kids Will Actually Love!)
Moving to Sydney from Dubai was a huge step full of excitement, beautiful new experiences, but also a lot of uncertainty. Saving money was a big concern for us, especially as a family of six. When we first stepped off the plane, we honestly wondered: Where do we even start? Are we going to make it here? Sydney is an expensive city, and starting fresh with a big family is no joke.
But soon we discovered that there are plenty of amazing places to explore without breaking the bank. In this post, I’m sharing our personal experiences and how we gradually immersed ourselves in the city’s beauty. The best part? Most of the spots I’ll share are completely free all you need to do is walk, bring your water, and enjoy the adventure with your family.
If you’ve been following my previous blogs, you’ll know that we didn’t end up living in Mascot long-term. But I still want to cover our first month there the places we visited and the kid-friendly, free spots we discovered. If you happen to stay in the area, these are great options to explore.
Mascot is actually one of the best locations to stay, whether you’re visiting for a week or longer. Its central location makes everything easily accessible, and you’ll see why as we share our experiences.
Mascot puts you right in the heart of one of Sydney’s most convenient suburbs for families. Just a short walk away is Mascot Library & George Hanna Memorial Museum at 2 Hatfield Street, part of the Bayside Library network, it’s a wonderful free stop for kids and adults alike. You can borrow books, use free Wi‑Fi and public computers, and even join free activities throughout the year like STEM sessions, storytimes, chess groups, or school holiday workshops (check the Bayside library What’s On calendar for exact dates and registration details).
Green Square Library, opened in 2018 in Sydney’s Green Square precinct, is a sustainable, architecturally striking community hub with light-filled, flexible interiors
A little further out, but still very easy to reach, is Green Square Library — and I have to say, my kids and I absolutely loved it! This modern, bright library offers cozy reading spaces, interactive kids’ areas, and regular free events that make it perfect for families. It’s a fantastic spot to let the kids explore, learn, and have fun without spending a cent.
When you step outside, Mascot has plenty of green spaces just minutes from your doorstep. Mascot Memorial Park, L’Estrange Park, and Lionel Bowen Park all offer playgrounds, picnic spots, and wide open lawns ideal for kids to run, play, or settle in for a family picnic. These parks are public and open 24/7, perfect for an easy afternoon with a frisbee or ball. On top of this, the wider Bayside area hosts free community events throughout the year — from seasonal markets to Christmas carols and youth programs offering a fun way to meet locals and enjoy festive activities together. As what I said, its ALL for FREE.
Natural Escapes: Blue Holes, La Perouse & Port Stephens
La Perouse offers a dramatic viewing point where rugged volcanic rocks and crystal-clear waters meet, providing sweeping vistas of the coastline, nearby islands, and frequent encounters with seabirds and seals.
For families who love nature and adventure, NSW’s wild swimming spots and coastal towns make unforgettable outings. One such hidden gem is Blue Hole Picnic Area in the Oxley Wild Rivers region (north of Sydney), where you can cool off with a bush swim, have a riverside picnic, and explore walking tracks surrounded by eucalypts and native birdlife. It’s a lovely way to connect with nature and enjoy a free day out (though do check current park conditions and safety guidelines before you go).
Closer to the city, La Perouse is one of those places that truly stayed with us. I remember one afternoon when we just decided to go without much planning — packed some snacks, brought water, and let the kids explore. They were so fascinated watching the waves crash against the rocks, and we even saw people fishing near by the shore and water. The kids kept saying how it felt like we were “on holiday,” even though we were just a short drive from Mascot. Moments like that reminded us that you don’t need to spend money to create beautiful family memories. With its coastal walks, picnic spots, and open space to run around, it quickly became one of our favorite free escapes.
Further up the coast, Port Stephens offers a huge variety of family-friendly experiences with nature at the centre. While some attractions there involve a fee, many don’t — scenic lookouts like Gan Gan, exploring beaches like Shoal Bay or Fingal Bay, and wandering the dunes at Birubi Beach are all free ways to soak up the coast and create memorable family moments on a budget.
Port Stephens is also home to Wobbyingup Beach, better known locally as “the Wand” — a wide stretch of golden sand that curves gently across the bay and stays largely uncrowded even on busy days. Just off the main beach you’ll find a popular camel-riding spot where small caravan rides meander along the shoreline, offering a unique, sun-drenched vantage point of the dunes and sparkling water. Riders of all ages enjoy the slow, steady pace and the chance to watch dolphins or pelicans from a slightly elevated view, making it a memorable family-friendly activity that complements the area’s swimming, sandboarding, and coastal walks.
Fruit Picking, Beaches & Summers to Remember
If you love seasonal experiences, fruit picking is a fantastic way to connect with nature and enjoy fresh produce together. Canoelands Orchard near Sydney offers classic Aussie orchard days with tractor rides, animal feeding, and seasonal fruit picking dont forget to check their calendar online for fruit picking dates (they change with weather and crop yields).
On one of our family days out, we also discovered a charming little chicken farm near Fagan Park, and it was such a simple yet memorable experience for the kids. They loved seeing the chickens up close and even get the experience of picking eggs on their own. My children had so much fun running after baby goats feeding them and patting bunnies which were so adorable something so different from city life and it turned into one of those unexpectedly joyful moments. Pairing it with a visit to Fagan Park made the day even more special. The park itself is huge, with beautifully maintained gardens, open fields, picnic areas, and plenty of space for kids to run freely. It’s one of those places where you can slow down, bring your own food, and just enjoy being together as a family without spending much at all.
There’s a small fee at these two favorite spots, but you can save money by choosing the family ticket—ideal for large families like ours.
Down the NSW south coast, the beaches around Sydney are a huge draw for families. We knew about the quieter beach at Austinmer near Wollongong, there’s a stretch of sand and sea for every vibe and skill level, we were thrilled how family friendly the place is, there were pool areas where everyone can just jumped in if you’re not comfortable swimming in an open beach there were surfers and people who loves enjoying with the big waves. Also the picnic areas were stretch through out where plenty of spaces for more activities, I couldnt help to mention that there were more playing activities for kids as built in play grounds and sports for the whole family members to enjoy and the best part? It’s completely FREE.
Jervis Bay is a coastal paradise in New South Wales known for its clear turquoise waters, abundant marine life, and sheltered bays ideal for snorkeling, dolphin watching, and national park walks. Hyams Beach, on the bay’s shores, is famous for having some of the whitest sand in the world and calm, shallow waters perfect for families and peaceful beach days.
And speaking of unforgettable coastal highlights, celebrating our first family summer Christmas in Jervis Bay and welcoming the New Year at Hyams Beach truly feels like a dream. I still remember how surreal it was swapping winter traditions for sunshine, soft white sand, and crystal clear waters. The kids were running barefoot, building sandcastles, and laughing under the summer sky while we just took it all in. Moments like these remind you how beautiful and different life can be, and how some of the best memories are made in the simplest ways. This memories were by far the most unexpected, beautiful and truly amazing things can happen, Im truly grateful that these memories will be kept and remembered for a lifetime.
